Not only does it provide paperwork for audit purposes, but having regular calibrations conducted allows businesses to know they meet their H&S and quality standards.

Considering changing from your current service provider to SNB? This blog will intend to inform new and existing customers how our engineers calibrate machinery when on site.

Metal Detector Calibration

Prior to attending a site, SNB will provide RAMS for the visit. This will include insurances documents, risk assessments and method statements.

On an engineer’s arrival to your site, engineers will make sure to read any H&S documentation and put on the appropriate clothing to enter the factory floor. Additionally, the engineer will check with your Quality or H&S department that they are able to conduct the calibration on site.

When attending the unit, the engineer will ascertain whether the reject system is in use. They must also understand that there will be no interruptions in calibrating the metal detector and the rejected product can be recovered. Without this, a calibration cannot be carried out on the metal detector.

To start calibration, three fresh sample test packs will be needed to pass through the metal detector (these need to be free of contamination). These should be marked to make sure no products are lost during testing. From this, engineers will test all three metals (Ferrous, Non Ferrous and Stainless Steel) at the front, middle and back of each of the packs. This is to check that the metal detector detects and rejects the packs each time. These results will be recorded on the calibration certificate with the size of each metal which was found.

If these tests have not been completed without adjustments or found to need repairs, then production lines would need to be stopped to resolve these issues. For production lines that cannot be stopped, an SNB engineer will make a note on a service report.

The engineer will then look at the all-around health of the unit such as the belt, ancillaries and any failsafe’s. Again, this will be recorded on the calibration certificate. Once this has all been done, the SNB engineer will inform his site contact before moving onto the unit. Any additional work that needs carrying out, an engineer will inform the site contact if they are able to proceed with this.

At the end of the visit calibration certificates will be provided.

Checkweigher Calibration

Again, similar to the metal detector, the engineer will come on site following all the correct procedures and then look at the reject on the system. Fresh produce is needed to run tests on the checkweigher and make sure the unit displays the correct weight each time. An engineer will pass a product over the checkweigher 10 times and record this on a calibration certificate. The engineer will make sure the correct weight is displayed and the unit rejects the product satisfactory.

If applicable, the bin-full, reject confirm and infeed PE fail is checked to make sure they are working satisfactory.

Any repairs or adjustments that need to be made, an SNB engineer will ask their site contact or quality team member to see if they are able to conduct this. If unable to notes will be added on the calibration certificate and service report.

Similar to a metal detector calibration, all checkweigher certificates will be issued at the end.

How Much Would My Calibration Visit Cost?

Looking for a pricing on a calibration of your units? All we need to know is the following:

– How many units you have? (eg 1 metal detector and 2 combination systems)

– Let us know your address (eg LS25 6NF)

From there, we will be able to advise which of our offices is closest to your site (Sherburn-In-Elmet, Bathgate or Luton) and the price for the visit.

Get a quote today and see how we compare!

Receive a Quote

Having a service provider conduct calibrations on your inspection equipment is crucial to making sure your units are in the correct working order.
